“Rose is an Irish Thoroughbred. She made her debut at Newbury in 2009, then raced at Newmarket and Sandown Park, all in England. She was imported to the US and made her first start at Gulfstream in 2011. She went on to race in allowance and graded stakes at Monmouth, Penn National, Hollywood Park, and her final race at Santa Anita in 2012.

She then became a Broodmare and had 8 foals, with her last being a filly born in February 2022 in Florida. She developed anhidrosis and in the Fall of 2022 was responsibly rehomed to Vermont where the climate would be better suited to her needs. On February 18, 2023, she was run through a New York livestock auction, labeled as an appendix QH, in horrible condition, and purchased by a dealer.

I am involved in networking at-risk Thoroughbreds. Myself and a fellow networker, Leah, were able to connect her with Gerdas Equine Rescue Inc. She did quarantine with our friend Jenn in New York, and my daughter Liz and I picked her up in April to foster, continue her rehab, and aim for the Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover Broodmare Division.

She got a late start under saddle as she needed to gain weight. She has proven to be very willing, sweet and uncomplicated, both on the ground and under saddle. I am looking forward to showcasing what these amazing mares can do in their third career.

My advice for future competitors: enjoy the journey with your horse and the camaraderie of fellow competitors. The Makeover is a truly unique experience!”
